Day 2 Tuesday, January 28th 2020 : LISBON / FATIMA
Arrive in Lisbon and be welcomed at the airport by your ETS representative. Discover the Church of Saint Anthony built on the birthplace of Saint Anthony of Padua. Anthony of Padua came very young in religion, followed theological studies and then joined the Franciscan ideal before dying of exhaustion at the age of 35. He was canonized less than a year after his death after many miraculous cures, which he was considered responsible, were discovered. He became the patron saint of Portugal and was elevated to doctor of the Church in 1946. Next, visit the Cathedral of Saint Mary Major built on the site of a former mosque shortly after the conquest of the city by Alfonso Henriques in 1147. The building underwent many restorations due to earthquakes but kept over the years an aspect of fortified church overlooking the city. You’ll see there a beautiful cloister and the baptistery which served during the baptism of Saint Anthony in 1195. Transfer to Fatima (98 miles).
Day 3 Wednesday, January 29th 2020 : FATIMA
After breakfast, visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Discover the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Here you can see Francisco and Jacinta’s graves, Aljustrel, the Village of Shepherds, Loca do Anjo and Valinhos (the places of the apparitions). In 1917, during World War I, the Virgin Mary appeared to three young children in Fatima revealing to them the power of the Rosary. She also entrusts them with three secrets: the vision of hell, the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the announcement of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. Enjoy dinner at the hotel or at the restaurant and return to your hotel for overnight.
Day 4 Thursday, January 30th 2020 : FATIMA / SALAMANCA / BURGOS
After breakfast, transfer to Salamanca (242 miles). Walk in the medieval district of Salamanca. Discover the Plaza Mayor, the true heart of the city, and the Patio de Escuelas, a small square in front of the university opening on some of the most characteristic of buildings of the Salamanca plateresque architecture style. Discover the beautiful ensemble of the old and the new cathedral from the outside. In the 16th century, Salamanca was so influent that the ancient 12th century was not big enough to welcome all the Christians. A second cathedral was then built contiguously. From the amazing lantern tower topped with the statue of a cock to the beautiful fresco of the Last Judgment. From the 16th century organ to the tombs of emperors, the two cathedrals are home to many architectural treasures. Transfer to Burgos (244 miles) and enjoy dinner before overnight.
Day 5 Friday, January 31st 2020 : BURGOS / AZPEITIA / LOURDES
After breakfast, transfer to the Sanctuary of Loyola in Azpeitia (115 miles). Discover the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order. The sanctuary is built around the family mansion where the saint was raised. Transfer to Lourdes in France (149 miles). Dinner at the hotel or at the restaurant and overnight.
Day 6 Saturday, February 1st 2020 : LOURDES
After breakfast, continue to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, doorway to the Pyrenees mountain chain. Known throughout the world, it is here that the Virgin Mary appeared to the uneducated shepherdess as the Immaculate Conception. Today the grotto where there were the apparitions is a place of prayer for all the pilgrims who flock here, many on pilgrimages for the sick. Each person can take some water from Lourdes for himself or for a friend. You can walk in the footsteps of Bernadette and visit the places where she lived: the Boly mill where she grew up and the Cachot where her family had to move later on. The sanctuary also offers the possibility to deepen one’s relationship with the Virgin Mary. The welcoming of the sick is particularly well organized and physical healings continue to happen. The museum of the miraculously healed and the examining office, in the confines of the sanctuary, is there to attest to the authenticity. Time permitting, participate in prayer at the grotto of the apparitions, walk the way of the cross, go to the baths, see a movie about the story of Saint Bernadette or go to confession.
