Day 1 Sept. 13 – Depart USA
Depart on your international overnight flight.
Day 2 Sept. 14 – Arrive in Manchester / Lincoln / Walsingham
This morning you will be greeted at the airport and will travel to Lincoln, where Pilgrims were held in custody prior to their sailing to the colonies. You’ll visit St. Mary’s Cathedral here to remember St. Hugh. Continue on to Walsingham and the Slipper Chapel for Mass. Slipper Chapel was once second only to Canterbury in importance for English Pilgrimage. The structure originated in 1340, but was revived from neglect in the 1900’s. Wander the Chapel of the Holy Spirit and the Cloister Gardens. Check in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Sept. 15 – Cambridge
Enjoy an in-depth walking tour of Ely cathedral. The present structure was begun in the late 11th Century during the reign of William the Conqueror and serves the present community as the “ship of the Fens”, towering above the surrounding flatlands. Then walk the grounds of the various Cambridge Colleges, where the likes of C. S. Lewis, A. A. Milne, and St. John Fisher lived and worked. Finish the day in Maidstone for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 Sept. 16 – Aylesford / Canterbury
This morning travel to Aylesford and celebrate Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock here in 1251. Continue on to Canterbury Cathedral. Begun in 597, the church was the leader of the Catholic worship in England for centuries. St. Thomas Becket was murdered here. The subsequent pilgrimages here inspired Chaucer to write his “Canterbury Tales”. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 Sept. 17 – London – Driving tour
This morning, enjoy a panoramic driving tour of the city, with a visit to Westminster Abbey. Drive past Parliament and Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, and the Tower of London. Visit the Tyburn Benedictine Convent and celebrate Mass at Our Lady of Assumption and St. Gregory on Warwick Street. Check in to your hotel. Dinner on own tonight.
Day 6 Sept. 18 – Oxford
This morning you’ll journey north to Oxford for a campus tour that will include places connected to the Venerable John Newman: Oriel College, St. Clement’s Church, St. Mary’s, and Littlemore (Blessed Dominic Barberi). Celebrate Mass at one of the nearby churches. Also stop at the Oxford Oratory, before returning to London for overnight. Dinner on own.
