And, of course, tour St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s frescoes, now restored to their full, colorful glory. History is woven through the streets and neighborhoods of Rome as in no other city. Explore the many wonders of ancient Rome as you visit the magnificent Colosseum and the Pantheon. From the most sacred hill of ancient Rome, Campidoglio, view the Forum. See the Circus Maximus, Arch of Titus, famous Baths of Caracalla, the Arch of Constantine, and the Victor Emanuel Monument. View the Monti Region, Rome’s most ancient neighborhood, which spreads over three of its seven hills. Visit the Basilica di San Clemente. Descending below the present church, one enters a 4th-century church containing some of the world’s finest medieval frescos, dating from the 8th to the 11th century. Going lower again, one enters the 1st-century area with its Mithraic temple, and across a narrow alleyway stands a large public building, around whose foundations flow the lost waters of ancient Rome. Above the excavation stands the present 12th century Basilica, with its magnificent mosaic, early Renaissance frescoes, and the 6th-century marble chancel from the earlier church. Next, visit the Basilica of St. Peter in Chains to admire Michelangelo’s statue. Time permitting, visit Colle Oppio Park for a great view of the Colosseum. Enjoy dinner together this evening. After breakfast, take the high-speed train from Rome to Milan (Approx 3 hrs.). Enjoy free time at Galleria Vittoria for you to wander the shops. Visit the Imperial Palace of Milan, where the Edict of Milan was issued in 313 AD, granting religious tolerance across the Roman Empire. Possibly meet with local representatives this evening or worship with Pastor Giacalone. Enjoy dinner together this evening after checking into your hotel. (B, D)

October 23 – Milan After breakfast, enjoy a tour of Milan. See the Column of San Lorenzo and spend time at the Duomo di Milano, which started being built in 1386. It is the third-largest church in the world after St. Peter’s in Rome and the Cathedral of Seville. Take the train back to Rome (Approx. 3 hrs.). Check into your hotel and enjoy dinner together. (B, D)

After breakfast, tour the Catacombs of St. Sebastiano and see some of the only surviving examples of early Christian art. In the 1840s, Pope Gregory XVI took steps to preserve the catacombs and their treasures. Visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, which stands over the place Constantine built the first church over St. Paul’s grave. In the afternoon, explore the romance of Rome as you climb the graceful Spanish Steps and stop at the famous Trevi Fountain. Legend says those who toss a coin into the fountain will one day return to Rome to toss another into the waters of Trevi. Return to the hotel and enjoy dinner together.
