Day 3 June 6, Tuesday: Carfin Motherwell
Depart for a visit to the historic small mining village of Carfin. At Carfin Motherwell, see a site built using the template of the Grotto of Massabielle, Our Lady of Lourdes. This site, built by unemployed miners of the village, has been used as a place of procession and prayer since the early part of the 20th century. Before returning to Glasgow for lunch, enjoy a visit to the community of Carfin, a town of significant importance in the life of Scottish Catholicism. It is also one of the Scottish medieval churches to have survived the Reformation unscathed. Visit Inverary Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell. Witness Iona, a holy isle, and an enduring symbol of Christianity in Scotland. St. Columba and his followers came here from Ireland in AD 563. Today, the Iona Community continues the tradition of worship first established by St. Columba 1450 years ago. Iona Abbey is one of Scotland’s most historic and sacred sites.
